tabla-CO-lab :: Thursday September 17th, 2009

This month, tabla-CO-lab features an array of international Toronto-based musicians with ancestries and musical influences from around the world including Iran, India, Cuba, Jamaica, UK, Canada and the online world SecondLife.com.  Join us as Gurpreet Chana “The Tabla Guy” and Amir Amiri start off the night with a mesmerizing collaboration between tabla and santur (a 72 string hammered Dulcimer).  The night will then venture to experimental instrumental collaborations in Ethereal Dance, Jazz, Pop, Electronica, DnB, Ballads and more with Omar Martinez (bass, guitar), HatHead (keys, synths,flute) and Gurpreet (tabla, cajon).  On the 1's and 2's all night will be Toronto’s DJ/Producer/Radio Show host duo Version Xcursion [VX], Sassa’le and Aram Scaram, with special live instrumentation by all the featured artists jumping into the trip hop, drum’n’bass, and dub mix.

What is tabla-CO-lab?

tabla-CO-lab is an exclusive event of live performance collaborations presented by TablaHYPE.  Venture into the uncharted territories of expression and musical dialogue between instrumentalists, vocalists, dj’s and Gurpreet Chana with his Tabla and arsenal of percussion instruments.  Together they will combine their musical and cultural backgrounds to explore all styles of music. These confidential collaborations will come to life the third Thursday of the month on the stage of the legendary Melody Bar @ The Gladstone Hotel.

What is Thursday Night Confidential?

Thursday Night Confidential is hosted by the Gladstone Hotel and feature multiple bands and performers each week co-presented by established independent music promoters and partnering beverage sponsors. The series will take place in the Gladstone’s Melody Bar that has, after all, been rockin’ the hood since 1889! 

What is TablaHYPE?

TablaHYPE is a Toronto based Live Entertainment Service company, providing services ranging from end-to-end live entertainment, event production, artist management and development, niche marketing, public and media relations and event consulting.  TablaHYPE was first established in 1999 as the management company for Canadian artist Gurpreet Chana “The Tabla Guy”.  As Gurpreet’s career boasted success as a solo artist, so did that of TablaHYPE’s as an Entertainment Service company.

The Artists:

It all started from banging his hands on pots and pans or anything else he could get his hands on to hear and feel the beat. His grandfather Kesar Singh Chana saw this enthusiasm and gave him his first Tabla set and since that moment 29 years ago, there has been no looking back.  Gurpreet has been taught in the Punjab Gharana (style) from his Ustad Ji Professor Parshotam Singh.  His passion for percussion has taken him to perform at many music concerts and festivals around the globe.  From constantly creating and collaborating amongst his peers, Gurpreet’s music has been repeatedly requested and more importantly remembered for its distinctive sound and moving beats.  This has led him to perform and record with artists such as Nelly Furtado, Wyclef Jean, legendary UK DJ/ Producer Bally Sagoo, Juno Award winning Kiran Ahluwalia, The Bombay Dub Orchestra, Jorane, DJ Rekha, and open for Pete Rock and Lady Sovereign.

Amir was born in Tehran, Iran, where he studied the santur, a 72 string hammer dulcimer. He specialized in the radiff system of Persian classical music and graduated from the University of Tehran with an honors degree in composition. His principle teachers included Meheran Ghalaee, Majeed Kyanee, and Parviz Meshkatiyan. He also studied Indian classical music (Regas) with teachers Ravi Shankar and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Since arriving in Canada and has welcomed the opportunity to work with western classical musicians with Bob Becker, Edgar Meyer and David Takeno, and has also collaborated with Hugh Fraser, Darcy Phillip Gray, Mike Murly, John Stetch and Bill Cahn. Amir has worked as a percussionist/ composer for the theatre production of The Odyssey (Banff Centre Theatre Arts Program and Manitoba Theatre for Young People), Manitoba theatre centre vertigo theatre VIA Dance Ensemble, Lu Lu Dance Productions, Decidedly Jazz Dance works, Alberta Ballet, McDonald Wilson e University of Calgary Dance Program. Amir has been commissioned by CBC radio and as well done pieces for santur and orchestra in collaboration with Andrea Young He was awarded the 2003 Artist of the Year from CBC Galaxy Rising Stars Program. Also he was awarded a Betty for his composition for the western Canadian production of Helen’s necklace.

OMAR MARTINEZ
Omar was born in Havana, Cuba where he studied bass and guitar.  His passion for music lead him to study and perform many styles of music including jazz, pop, cuban, and experimental improv with various artists.  Martinez now resides in Toronto, Canada where he spends his time and shares his musical talent in songwriting, recording and performing.  Currently, Omar has been spending most of his time songwriting for artists such as Tha Hook alongside Ron Allen, Levi, & Dean Jarvis.  In 2008 he co-wrote with Ivana Santilli on her latest album "T.O.N.Y" and has toured with her since 2002.  Since 2005 he has also been working with writing partner Nasri (New Kids on The Block "Summertime", Michael Bolton).  His international compositional credits also include musical scores for Spanish Films "Liberame De Ti", "Buenos Dias", and "Raizes".  With years of experience and hit songs under his belt, his versatility and ear for great music continues to make him the sought after choice by many independent and major Latin American artists such as Jenna Andres (Def Jam), Cindy Gomez (Interscope), Kosta (Atlantic), Esthero, and Hilario Duran.

HATHEAD – http://hatheadinc.com/hathead
HATHEAD blends world music, urban beats, jazz elements and ambient soundscapes.  Performing on keyboards and wind synthesizer, HatHead improvises layers and melodies, creating arrangements and loops in real time.  HatHead performs mostly in the online virtual world of Second Life and is a busy live musician, performing in bands and recording sessions.  HatHead has recorded and performed with Juno nominated artist Justin Rutledge.  HatHead's jazz piano performances at overly priced restaurants won him Best Music from Toronto Life several years in a row.  HatHead has also recorded with Paul Humphreys and members of the Vancouver Chamber Orchestra.  You can catch HatHead every Wednesday throwing down funky Hammond B3 at Joe Mamma's.

VERSION XCURSION – http://www.versionxcursion.com
VERSION XCURSION a.k.a. SASSA’LE and ARAM SCARAM continue to break boundaries and concepts in pushing the music they love - ’DUB’.  Their former radio program on CKLN 88.1 FM established itself for 11 years in the community and internationally as a source for dub music both new and old, and for pushing new and exciting Canadian sounds. As producers they have 4 releases to date.  Currently they are working on their fifth release "VX Past & Present", a collection of previous releases, unreleased remixes and new material scheduled for release soon. As promoters and dj’s they are involved in two monthlies. The four year strong Dub & Beyond, has seen the likes of J Star (London, UK), Rob Smith (Britol, UK), J.Boogie (San Francisco, USA) and Big Toes Hi-Fi (Edinburgh, Scotland).  VX also team up with Natewize, Prince Blanco, Rednote and the Dubmatix Soundsystem for their monthly Dub Collective parties.  Look and listen out for VX as they take their sound to radio and dance floors worldwide.
