The Artists:
LAL http://www.lalforest.com, http://www.myspace.com/lalforest
LAL is a collective of musicians representing Uganda, Bangladesh, Barbados, and India featuring vocalist Rosina Kazi, laptop musician, Nicholas “Murr” Murray, and bassist Ian de Sousa. With a strong belief in the link between art and social change, the group has developed their own unique sound over the last decade, fusing South-Asian roots, West Indian fruits, and melancholic vocals with jazz sensibilities, hip hop influences, down tempo grooves, broken soul, and electro. Weaving their distinct sound with lyrical, socially conscious poetry, LAL has produced two full length albums, Corners (2002), and Warm Belly High Power (2004), which was awarded the best soul album in 2004 by Exclaim, Canada’s premier music magazine. They have also performed in a wide variety of festivals and impressive venues across Canada, Europe, Cuba and Pakistan, and have been recognized with support from the Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts and Toronto Arts Councils, for composing and recording in 2006 /2007. LAL continues to bring you even more captivating material with the release of their latest record, Deportation (spring 2008), which may be their most impressive work to date.
GURPREET CHANA [THE TABLA GUY] http://www.thetablaguy.com, http://www.myspace.com/thetablaguy
It all started from banging his hands on pots and pans or anything else he could get his hands on to hear and feel the beat. His grandfather Kesar Singh Chana saw this enthusiasm and gave him his first Tabla set and since that moment 29 years ago, there has been no looking back. Gurpreet has been taught in the Punjab Gharana (style) from his Ustad Ji Professor Parshotam Singh. His passion for percussion has taken him to perform at many music concerts and festivals around the globe. From constantly creating and collaborating amongst his peers, Gurpreet's music has been repeatedly requested and more importantly remembered for its distinctive sound and moving beats. This has led him to perform and record with artists such as Nelly Furtado, Wyclef Jean, legendary UK DJ/ Producer Bally Sagoo, Juno Award winning Kiran Ahluwalia, The Bombay Dub Orchestra, Jorane, DJ Rekha, and open for Pete Rock and Lady Sovereign.
